More Than Coffee: A Commitment to Ducks, Marshes, and Wetlands
Every fall and spring, millions of ducks travel ancient migration routes stretching across North America. Their survival depends on a connected chain of healthy breeding grounds, migration stopovers, and wintering habitat. When even one important link in that chain disappears, the effects can be felt throughout the flyways.
The latest numbers remind us why conservation cannot wait.
According to the 2026 Waterfowl Population Survey, approximately 33.4 million breeding ducks were estimated in the traditional survey area—6% below the long-term average. Mallards declined to approximately 5.9 million, their lowest estimate since 1993 and 26% below the long-term average. Northern pintails were 48% below their long-term average, while blue-winged teal were 22% below theirs.
There was encouraging news: the number of May ponds increased by 14% from 2025. However, pond numbers remained 9% below the long-term average, and conditions varied greatly across the prairie breeding grounds. These wetlands are where many ducks rest, nest, raise their young, and prepare for the long journey south.
Duck migration is an incredible natural event, but it cannot continue without habitat.
Why Habitat Matters
Ducks need more than one marsh or refuge. During migration, they require a series of healthy places where they can rest and rebuild the energy needed to continue their journey. Breeding ducks need wetlands surrounded by secure nesting cover. Wintering birds need dependable food, clean water, and protection from unnecessary disturbance.
When wetlands are drained, grasslands are lost, or marshes become degraded, ducks lose the places that make migration and successful reproduction possible.
Waterfowl populations naturally rise and fall with rainfall and changing environmental conditions. But long-term habitat loss makes it much more difficult for ducks to recover when drought arrives. Protecting and restoring wetlands gives waterfowl a fighting chance when conditions improve.
Our Commitment Is Real
We have received sarcastic messages questioning whether Flyway Brew Company’s commitment to conservation is authentic.
It is—and it will continue to be.
This is not a gimmick, a temporary advertising campaign, or a marketing story created to sell coffee. It is a genuine and dedicated effort to give something back to the marshes, wetlands, waterfowl, and outdoor heritage that have meant so much to us.
After 35 years of chasing waterfowl through different habitats, we have personally witnessed changes in the places ducks depend on. We have seen productive wetlands decline, important habitat disappear, and areas that once held birds become less capable of supporting them.
That experience is why Flyway Brew Company was built around a conservation mission.
We remain committed to directing 50% of our profits toward conservation efforts, organizations, projects, and individuals doing meaningful work for wetlands, marshes, waterfowl habitat, and clean water. That commitment is not dependent on whether someone believes a sarcastic comment or doubts our intentions. It is part of who we are and what this company is meant to accomplish.
How Buying Coffee Can Help
Most people already buy coffee. Choosing Flyway Brew Company turns an everyday purchase into an opportunity to support something larger.
You receive freshly roasted coffee that is shipped the day it is roasted. As the company grows, so does our ability to support real conservation work. One bag may feel like a small purchase, but thousands of people making that same choice can help fund habitat restoration, wetland protection, nesting projects, and other efforts that benefit waterfowl.
That is how ordinary actions become meaningful.
You do not have to own hundreds of acres or personally restore a marsh to make a difference. You can support businesses that are committed to giving back. You can share the mission, introduce others to the company, and help us build the resources needed to support people doing conservation work on the ground.
A Mission for Future Generations
This mission is about more than the number of ducks we see this season. It is about protecting the migration for the next generation.
We want our children and grandchildren to experience cold mornings in the marsh, wings moving against a sunrise, and the sound of waterfowl returning with the changing seasons. Those experiences will survive only if we protect the habitat that makes them possible.
Flyway Brew Company cannot accomplish that alone. We need customers who believe their daily choices can support lasting conservation. Every order helps us move closer to making a meaningful contribution.
We will continue roasting fresh coffee. We will continue supporting marshes, wetlands, clean water, and waterfowl habitat. And we will continue standing behind this commitment—regardless of the skepticism.
Because this has never been a gimmick.
It is a true passion, a real promise, and a dedicated effort to give back.
